A troubled sleep

Kurt Newton

The sixth chapbook from back room poetry.

This is what Kurt has to say about his chapbook –

Like a fever dream from a disturbed mind, A Troubled Sleep compiles Newton’s most surreal, most nightmarish poetry and prose poems to date.

Here is a taster poem from the chapbook to arouse your poetry appetite:

pulling the plug at the icu

lie still
when the silence wakes you
don’t breathe (you can’t breathe)
believe what your eyes are seeing
the creatures in the hall
are waiting to claim you
fate mongers and trauma thieves
paying off the bag ladies
with a few more hours of afterlife
to sit and play the slots

just slide out
from beneath that sheet
don’t look what you leave behind
(you can’t take what you leave behind)
your body is just a broken vessel
that leaks from the moment of its birth
but it’s not the juice the creatures want
it’s the residue trapped inside
they collect it into snuff boxes
and sell it on the black market

quick
while the window’s open
don’t be afraid
(there are worse things than death)
don’t wait to hear the creep of footsteps
or the scalpel scrape of collection tools
the bag ladies will soon run out of quarters
so follow my voice
out beyond this ledge
a simple leap of faith
